Marine Corps Pfc. Evan J. Braud, son of Amy Wallace of Jackson, and Steven J. Braud of Denham Springs, La., recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Army Reserve Pvt. Ledarius Boyd has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Boyd is the son of Curby Boyd of Cloverleaf Drive, Madison. He is a 2010 graduate of Madison Central High School.

'Parkways' becoming part of landscape, popular word

WHY ARE THERE so many parkways?

Madison Parkway, Galleria Parkway/Parkway East, Highland Colony Parkway, Annandale/Reunion Parkway – the list goes on.

Maybe the word gets repetitive, but it turns out that most of these parkways in Madison actually meet the dictionary definition: “a broad thoroughfare with a dividing strip or side strips planted with grass, trees, etc.”

Reservoir officials getting ready for summer use; adjusting water levels

SPRING JUST arrived March 20, but the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District (PRV) is already preparing for what General Manager John Sigman calls “the season.”

The PRV governs the 33,000-acre Ross Barnett Reservoir and the 17,000 acres of parks and neighborhoods surrounding it, including those in Madison and Rankin counties.
When asked to name the biggest focus point for the PRV in prepping for summer, Sigman said, “Believe it or not, it’s water.

Trail of Honor

All across the metro Jackson area and even throughout the United States hundreds of volunteers are busy making preparations for the 2012 Trail of Honor. This military salute event, which will be held May 19-20 in Jackson at the Harley-Davidson dealership, pays tribute to America’s armed forces and offers visitors a unique, free, and family-friendly experience. This year’s celebration marks the 10th anniversary of the Trail of Honor. Without the dedicated effort of tireless volunteers like Northsider Erik Hearon and Cheryl Shelton, the Trail of Honor would not exist.

New beats being implemented in Precinct Four

MORE POLICE coverage is on tap for the Northside, with the Jackson Police Department (JPD) coming through on its promise to increase the number of beats in Precinct Four.
The precinct’s new beat structure will be implemented this month.

A beat restructuring ceremony is slated for April 23 at Fondren Hall, at 4330 North State St., near Precinct Four headquarters. The event will start at 6 p.m., and is open to the public.
