Letter to the editor

Dear Editor:

In his column of March 29, Mr. Jeanes indicates that voter ID is designed only to discourage voter fraud. However, it also discourages voters who do not have an official photo ID. There are no verified cases of fraud which the ID would prevent. Getting one requires a birth certificate which costs. Its effect on the very poorest is clearly similar to the poll tax. Mr. Jeanes’ position is that of an elitist and the saddest part is that neither he nor many of your readers realize it nor are willing to acknowledge it.

Constant tuition hikes are not a workable long-range plan

We don’t buy Higher Education Commissioner Hank Bounds’ assertion that Mississippi’s universities have cut all they can from their operations without sacrificing quality.

Every university in this country is heavy on administration and light on the teaching demands of faculty. Mississippi is no different.

Nevertheless, there is no arguing with the trends that have occurred in higher education funding in this state for more than a decade.

Distracted driving causes 500,000 accidents a year

In an average year, 500,000 people nationally are injured in accidents caused by drivers who are distracted.  Orthopaedic surgeons in Mississippi are the specialists who put bones and limbs back together after accidents occur on our roadways – they would rather help all drivers decide to drive each time they get in the car and to keep bones and limbs healthy.

Church must stand fast on abortion

A columnist last week stated that the legal system should resolve the abortion issue and that the church should “butt out.” Amazing. History tells over and again that the church, the people of faith not the buildings, are usually the catalyst of great societal shifts. It’s a grand thing that the church didn’t butt out of the slavery issue. Likewise, we should all be thankful that Rev. King’s church didn’t butt out of the civil rights struggle.

A real world connection to the Titanic

All those Titanic centennial activities this month brought back memories of my first awareness of that historic happening, as well as a very tangential personal connection.

From the publisher - Downtown growth is crucial to entice young singles

I appreciate House Speaker Phil Gunn’s attempt to pinch pennies, but he’s wrong about banishing the state Department of Revenue to a cramped warehouse in-between Raymond and Clinton.

The Department of Revenue needs to move into the newly vacant Landmark building in downtown Jackson. This was the recommendation of the Barbour administration. A bill to that effect was introduced by Hinds state Sen. David Blount. It passed the Senate, but died in the House, presumably on Gunn’s instruction.

Not up to par - LeFleur's Bluff golf course suffers from shoddy management with unplayable links

IN THE LAST FOUR years, the nine-hole golf course at LeFleur’s Bluff State Park has fallen into disrepair.

The greens are covered with weeds. The fairways are bare in some spots while overgrown in others. And many of the hole markers that are used to inform golfers what hole they’re on are no longer in place.

Parkway PID to pay county back for delinquent fees

MADISON COUNTY will contribute to a bond payment next month for the Parkway East Public Improvement District (PID), but taxpayers won’t be on the hook forever, officials say.

In 2005 the county signed an agreement to contribute to bond payments on Galleria Parkway (formerly Parkway East) when the PID assessments fall short, if the county is satisfied that the PID has done all it can.

State of the Arts - Opera attempts to redefine identity to capture support

SHERRY BOYER and Jay Dean are the first to admit that the opera has had its share of financial difficulties in recent years.

Even before the Great Recession began in 2008, the Mississippi Opera had cut back on the number of performances it offered each year, and had seen some corporate funding dry up.

A Place of Worship - Vacation reaffirms choices made on journey

CASA ASSEMBLY of God in Casa, Ark., isn’t the kind of church I’m used to.

Casa (pronounced “Caysuh”) Assembly has an average attendance of around 25 people, and 95 percent of them are related to me. They have a piano and a keyboard, and the pastor’s wife plays acoustic guitar. The choir is made up of whoever feels like singing that day.
