State of the Arts - New Stage experiences growth despite downturn in economy

ACROSS THE country, theater companies seem to have bucked the trend of many arts groups in the down economy.

According to a report published in November 2011 by the Theatre Communications Group (TCG), 72 percent of theaters surveyed reported similar to or higher-than-expected attendance in 2010; 74 percent reported operations expenses to be at or below budget; and 63 percent of theaters ended the year in the black.

New Stage Theatre, Mississippi’s only professional theater, is no exception.

Churches moving away from spotlighting denominations in church names

A ROSE BY ANY other name would smell as sweet - but that doesn’t always apply to churches.

Out of a dozen or more congregations planted on the Northside in the past 10 or 15 years, only a few of them specify a denomination in their names.

That’s not necessarily because they’re all nondenominational. And apparently it’s not because these young churches are ashamed of where they come from, what they believe, or their denomination of choice.

Again Madison County covers bond payments for PID

MADISON COUNTY is giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to another PID.

The Parkway South Public Improvement District will get $258,328.13 from the county to make up the shortfall on a bond payment.

The Madison County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to make the contribution just a few weeks after voting to contribute over $460,000 to a bond payment for the Parkway East PID, located just north of the Parkway South PID.

A conversation with Michael Chew on MIB Foundation

Michael Chew is executive director of the Mississippi Industries for the Blind (MIB) and president of the MIB Foundation for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Chew is a 1981 graduate of Mississippi State University, and resides in Madison County with his wife and three children. He recently spoke to Sun Staff Writer Anthony Warren about MIB and the foundation that was set up about a year ago to support it.

Didn’t the foundation get started about a year ago?

Customer service needs work

Reading Lottie Boggan's column on customer service sans politesse (as in "unstudied rudeness"), I must admit it struck a familiar chord. Both she and I grew up in a period of gentler times and manners, when mega chain stores were just getting started and most local shopping was done with folks who may have gone to church or school with you, and at least remembered your name.

Feds won't face the music, but state controlling spending

If there’s one thing the nation’s politicians have been good at, it is jawboning about the deficit. When it comes to action, that’s another thing.

Last week, government leaders past and present gathered in Washington to have their annual gabfest about the federal budget.

You could tell from the tone of Associated Press reporter Andrew Taylor’s coverage of the “fiscal summit,” that even he is getting jaded with the discussion.

National Guard is hard work but satisfying

Since the 1630s, when America’s colonies needed militia protection from hostile forces of two different continents, the National Guard has remained prepared to protect the homefront from would-be invaders and nature’s unpredictable fury. Northsider Lee Smithson, a colonel in Mississippi’s National Guard since 1993, has fulfilled those missions in more ways than most could imagine, abroad and stateside alike.

Enjoy the holiday! It comes to you at a high price

THE PHOTO of Billy Elmore has always haunted me. It pops up every now and then as my computer screen rotates through thousands of stored photos.

He is a handsome lad, far younger than I am today. His appearance reminds me of my oldest son John. He has a long, handsome face.

I am probably the only person of my generation who could recognize his face. He died in World War II in 1942 and left no children. He was my great-uncle. My mother’s mother’s brother.
