Gardening Glimpses

In recent days, I commented, “If I had a dollar for every crape myrtle that’s blooming right now in South Madison County, I could take my entire extended family out to dinner at one of these elegant new restaurants,” and “Probably you could save it and pay off the Christmas bills.”

Color Guard

WAC Mary Leslie Thomas Townsend (center) is shown as the Color Guard led the
V-E Day parade in Paris, May 14, 1945, ahead of the troops. She was stationed in Paris during most of the war and survived the ‘buzz bombing’ of Paris. She is the mother of Northsiders Thomas and Edward Townsend and Libba Wilks.

A Father's Day Tribute

Leo McGehee flew airplanes, tail draggers and tricycle gear, L5 “Bird Dogs,” Tri-Pacer, Decathlon, Ercoupe, a T-33 Jet. Leo McGehee flew gliders in Swiss mountains and towed sailplanes in Mississippi. He flew acrobatics in the Stits “Playboy” experimental plane he assembled in his garage.

Daddy took me flying, let me fly the plane and even do stalls.

Leo McGehee captained sailboats, drove wooden speedboats, pulled skiers behind ski boats, fished out of bass boats, and carried school kids on houseboats.

The adult ballet class of Ballet Mississippi recently held a class demonstration at The Blake, a retirement community in Ridgeland. Residents observed and participated in the class. Bower and Cint wed in Port Gibson November 11

Bonnie Denise Bower and Jason Michael Cint were wed November 11, at the home Isabella in Port Gibson. The honorable Judge Jimmy Ellis officiated the double-ring ceremony.

Parents of the bride are Judith Myers Scruggs and the late Billie Rowe Scruggs of Port Gibson. Parents of the bridegroom are Michael Cint of Arroyo Grande, Calif., and Christine Cint of Grand Rapids.

Following the ceremony family and guests enjoyed dinner with the couple.

At one time, Art Linkletter was the highest-paid and best-loved of ad lib artists and masters of ceremonies in the nation. His “kids say the darndest things” segment was the most popular element of his television show in the late 1950s and ’60s. Putting a microphone in the hands of uninhibited, honest children was edgy stuff in those days.
