Cascio named Parent of Year at Ann Smith Elementary

Obituaries

Marie J. Wright

A celebration of the life of Marie J. Wright will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 22 at the First Baptist Church of Madison.

Mrs. Wright, 83, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., passed away June 8 at the Acosta-Rua Center of Community Hospice of NE Florida. 

Born in Carthage on January 21, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Walter Jack and Mary Evans Johnston.  She married A. Thomas Wright and moved to Jackson, where she owned and operated Marie Wright Beauty Salon in the Woodland Hills area for many years.

Feasibility studies to outline improvements needed to upgrade Thalia Mara Hall

JACKSON CITY officials will soon have a road map on how to improve an artistic landmark in downtown Jackson.

Plans are still in the works to make some much-needed upgrades to Thalia Mara Hall, but officials are awaiting the findings from two feasibility studies to determine how best to carry out those plans.

“We expect the results any day now,” said Director of Human and Cultural Services Michael Raff. “These studies will help  us ensure that Thalia Mara will be a home for great performances for another 44 years.”

Jackson to save millions with refinancing of bonds

A RECENT bond refinancing will save the city of Jackson approximately $3.3 million over the course of the next two years.

The savings will be used to make repairs to the capital city’s ailing water and sewer systems.

But much like a person pouring a thimble of water into a bucket, the millions likely won’t make much of a difference when looking at the hundreds of millions of dollars in water and sewer needs faced by the municipality.

Carjacking

JACKSON POLICE were still looking for a car last week that was stolen in an early morning robbery carjacking on the Northside.

On June 11, a man was getting into his vehicle in the 200 block of Edgewood Terrace when his car was taken at gunpoint.

Jackson police spokeswoman Officer Colendula Green said the victim was getting into his 2003 white Nissan Maxima at around 2 a.m., when he noticed the suspect and his driver pull up in a white vehicle.

“A black male got out with a handgun and demanded his (the victim’s) keys,” Green said.

County Line overlay

ONE JACKSON city councilman still wants stricter architectural and color guidelines for East County Line Road, despite the fact that he has little support from the city in getting them.

Last year, Ward One Councilman Quentin Whitwell proposed an ordinance to create the East County Line Road Overlay District.

The district would have complemented the overlay that was put in place on the north side of the busy corridor by the city of Ridgeland in 2010. However, because of a technicality in city code, the city council refused to bring it out of committee in August.

LeFleur East cameras

A PARTY HELD at Highland Village will mean new security cameras in LeFleur East.

LeFleur East has received a $2,000 grant from the Jackson Police Foundation, money that will be used to help pay for new surveillance cameras to be placed throughout the community.

LeFleur East Executive Director Kelly Headley  said the foundation is appreciative of the grant, and is looking forward to putting the money to use.

The cameras, Headley said, will be used to “deter crime. We’re doing it to make the area safer.”

Foul-smelling water

STAGNATION, not algae blooms, has been the cause of the foul-smelling water recently on the Northside.

Public Works Deputy Director David Willis said the city recently tested the water and learned that “chlorine levels were slightly lower than usual.”

The city, after receiving a call from the Sun last week, decided to flush the system.

Willis said that as a result most of the foul-smelling and tasting water that Northsiders have experienced in recent weeks will soon be gone.
