Madison County experiences growth in assessed values

AROUND THIS TIME last year, Madison County Tax Assessor Gerald Barber said the county would be fortunate to grow just one percent in total assessed value in the coming year.

He was wrong, and he’s happy about it. The county’s assessed value grew by three percent. In this economy, that’s good news.

“Three percent is awesome, considering some of my brothers and sisters in surrounding counties are having negative growth,” Barber told the board of supervisors when he presented the 2012 tax rolls last week.

Retirement fund still solvent; hit hard by stock market crash

Jackson’s police and firefighter retirement system is underfunded by nearly $62 million, but the system is still solvent, so say city officials.

The system was on track to be fully funded by 2020, but fell behind as a result of the near crash of the stock market in 2008 when investment returns dried up.

Madison supervisors vote to address problem of Hearn Creek erosion

WITH A CREEK eroding in Madison and a storage building in danger of falling in, the Madison County Board of Supervisors voted recently to express official interest in fixing the problem.

“This was kind of step one for our local soil conservationists to send out their engineers, and we’ll send out our engineers,” said District 1 Supervisor John Bell Crosby referring to Hearn Creek, which lies in his district between Rice Road and North Old Canton Road.

Con artist targeting N’siders

Residents in two Northside neighborhoods are being targeted by a scam artist who is attempting to take advantage of their good nature over the phone.

Authorities and neighborhood leaders are urging residents, if they’re contacted by the alleged scammer, to write down his name and number and report it immediately to the police.

“We’ve had several phone calls from a person posing as a neighbor who lives three houses down saying he need(s) money for a car part,” said Lake Trace Homeowners Association President Jimmy Stiglets.

Two people who knew where they were going

JUST AFTER EASTER, I took a trip to Arkansas to see family and friends.

I got to visit with my grandma for a few days, and I even saw my 20-year-old cousin Jake, whom I typically only see at Easter. Jake and Garrett, Aunt Margaret’s boys, always stayed kind of quiet at Easter family get-togethers – until they started smashing eggshells on people’s heads, that is.

Within three months of my vacation, both Grandma and Jake were gone. I am so glad I took that trip.

Grandma had opinions, and she always shared them.
