New playground for Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland planned

WORK ON A new playground at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland should start any day now, Recreation and Parks Director Chris Chance said.

Officials awarded the bid for the playground two weeks ago to J.A. Dawson & Company, based in Pelham, Ala. The company had the lowest and best bid at $244,000.

New interchange slated to open August 3

THE FIRST BIT of milestone work on the new I-55 interchange in Madison and Ridgeland should be done right around the August 3 deadline, one official said.

“It’s going to be really close,” said Ken Wallace, District 5 engineer for the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT).

“We’re about 60 to 70 percent complete,” Wallace told the Sun last week. “The rain is not helping. We’ve got to wait for everything to dry out.

Proposed landfill permit denied by state board

A PROPOSED LANDFILL in south Madison County might not be dead, but it appears to be mostly dead for now.

Last week the permit board for the Mississippi Department for Environmental Quality (MDEQ) voted unanimously to deny Mark Bilberry’s permit application to put in a landfill on his property off North County Line Road.

Bilberry’s solid-waste landfill would have been the third in the county. The Little Dixie landfill borders Bilberry’s land, and the city of Canton has a landfill too.

Police stop house burglary on Jamaica; arrest suspects

ONE SUSPECT had bonded out and two others were behind bars last week following the burglary of a Northside home.

On July 9, Jackson police arrested Ontario Williams, 18, Nokoyea Clayton, 18, and a juvenile, all of Jackson, for allegedly breaking into a home in the 5400 block of Jamaica Drive.

Williams was released last week on $25,000 bond. Clayton had failed to make bond, and the juvenile was being held at the Henley-Young Juvenile Justice Center, said police spokeswoman Colendula Green.

Justice Department okays Hinds redistricting plan

THE U.S. DEPARTMENT of Justice has approved new district lines for Hinds County.

The lines, which were passed by the board of supervisors in early 2011, will now be implemented.

Redistricting consultant Derrick Johnson said the board will now notify voters affected by the changes.

“I’m proud they’ve been approved and will be prepared to assist (the board) to see that the lines are properly implemented,” he said.

Natchez Trace

Road construction started last week on a damaged section of the Natchez Trace Parkway at milepost 94.8, south of Ridgeland.   This section has been closed since March due to a failure in the road base that made the road unsafe for vehicular travel.

Building permits in Jackson

WHAT DOES it take to get a building permit?

How long does it take to get a property approved?

It all depends on the contractor and how long construction takes, say Jackson city officials.

To be eligible for a building permit in Jackson, a contactor must be bonded and licensed with the city and state. He or she needs to have a $5,000 security bond with the city and have a business license in the county in which he or she lives.

Up, up and away in a big balloon

AS WE FLOATED off the grassy field, the man in the basket with me feigned surprise and said, “Uh oh! What do we do now?”

I’d met the hot-air balloon pilot - a tall, thin man from Waynesboro named Dean Durr - a little after six that morning at the pilots briefing at the Canton Multipurpose Complex. It was the weekend of the Mississippi Championship Hot Air Balloon Fest.

When Mr. Durr found out I’d be riding with him on this morning’s “fun flight” as a member of the media, he asked if I’d ever flown before.
