Talent show winner

Earn Eagle

Boy Scout Troop 18, of First Presbyterian Church,  recently held a Court of Honor to recognize new Eagle Scouts. Alex Russell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Russell, received the rank of Eagle. Russell is a student at Jackson Prep. For his Eagle project he rebuilt computer desks for the Neighborhood Christian Center.

ACT / SAT workshop

Jackson Prep will offer three options for ACT / SAT workshops in the fall for students in grades 11 and 12. Option one and two: August 11, 18 and 25 or September 15, 22 and 29, 10 a.m. - noon and 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. Option three is six Thursdays from 6 - 8 p.m. August 30, September 6, 20 and 27, October 4 and 11. Today virtual visits replace screen doors, front porches

What is that particle within that magnetically draws me closer to a screen door?

Perhaps it is the proximity to a porch with rocking chairs or a swing hanging low or a kitchen where tomatoes sit upside down on the counter.

Maybe it is the whir of an oscillating fan co-mingled with the night noises of crickets near the banks of the Pearl River where Susie and I would sleep overnight on Mattie Lou’s sleeping porch in junior high school.

Gardening glimpses

Did you ever plan a dinner party and consider inviting a new guest? Or a weekend trip - shopping excursion or hunting trip, with space for one more person? How did you decide whom to choose? And how did it turn out - amiably, with a prospect of a new lifelong acquaintanceship? Contentious because of differing personalities and social styles? Or just nothing much, and you’re left with regrets because the newcomer sort of faded into the woodwork, obviously not having a good time?

Bright Lights, Belhaven Nights planned August 11

An original painting by Stacy Greer Underwood, a native Jacksonian and Belhaven resident for more than 11 years, will be the featured artwork for the 2012 Bright Lights, Belhaven Nights street festival which is set for Saturday, August 11.  Her painting will be featured on this year’s festival poster and t-shirts.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Bobbie Coats of Madison and the late Buck Coats, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Nick Ellis of Yazoo City.

The prospective bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wyman Jones of Brandon. He is the grandson of Sarah Franklin of Pearl, and the late Keith Cooper of Morton, Patsy Jones of Noxapater, and the late Jackie Jones Sr. of Morton.
