Miss Haggard, Peacock planning July 21 wedding in Athens, Ga.

Judge and Mrs. Harold Patrick Haggard of Athens, Ga., announce the engagement of their daughter, Emily Elizabeth Haggard, to Scott Edward Peacock, son of Eddie and Stephanie Peacock of Madison. Miss Haggard is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Richardson and of Nira D. Haggard and the late Philip Haggard, all of Athens.

LeFleur East seeks special permits for new headquarters

LEFLEUR EAST WANTS to use the Creekmore House as its headquarters, and is now seeking permission from the city of Jackson to do so.

The foundation has applied for a special exception permit to use the 3,000-square-foot home on Old Canton Road for office and reception space.

The planning board is expected to vote on the application at its meeting on July 25. The meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m., in the Warren Hood Building.

Zoning Administrator Esther Ainsworth said her office has received no complaints regarding the plans.

New principals to greet students at area schools this fall

NORTHSIDERS will see several new school principals when students start classes again this fall. But most of the “new” faces are not so new, as assistant principals step into many of the lead roles.

At Madison Central High School (MCHS), former assistant principal Austin Brown is returning as head principal. He was head principal at Sumner Hill Junior High School in Clinton this past year.

Northside real estate market showing signs of improvement

The real estate market on the Northside has appeared to pick up in recent months, but overall sales for 2012 are still down when compared to pre-recession numbers.

Multiple Listing Service (MLS) of Jackson reports that for May 2012, home sales were up 7.5 percent from May 2011. Median sales prices were also up, 11.3 percent from May 2011. For 2012, January was the only month where sales were below the previous year, with increases being reported in April and February. Sales remained flat in March.

Specialty tags to help benefit PRV

THE PEARL RIVER Valley Water Supply District (PRV), the governing body for the Ross Barnett Reservoir and the land around it, is trying to raise money with specialty license plates.

If the PRV gets 300 people committed to pay $31 each, the state tax commission will print the tags – which have yet to be designed.

New evaluations to increase taxes

MADISON COUNTY taxpayers who own farm or forest land in the Gluckstadt area might see a slight change in their property tax bill later this year.

Madison County Tax Assessor Gerald Barber told the board of supervisors at a meeting last month that about 1,900 landowners would be affected by some changes in soil values.

“Some [taxpayers], it’s just pennies different. Others, it could be several hundred dollars,” Barber told the Sun.

A conversation with David Brownlee on Christ Methodist

David Brownlee has been a pastor in the United Methodist Church for more than three decades. The last three years have been spent as pastor at Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson. Brownlee is a graduate of United Wesleyan College in Pennsylvania and Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky. He and his wife Irene have one daughter.

Before coming to Jackson, he spent 30 years ministering to people in the Raleigh, N.C., area.

Legislature makes progress on many fronts

This weekend marked the beginning of a new fiscal year, and Mississippians will see many new laws take effect to reduce government spending, cut taxes on job creators, improve education and protect families. The Mississippi Legislature concluded a successful session this spring with the adoption of a $5.5 billion budget - on time, no less - that set aside money in savings, reduced taxpayers’ debt burden and prioritized education funding, including increases in the Mississippi Adequate Education program and community colleges.
