Madison schedules hearing on redistricting August 21

By KATIE EUBANKS

Sun Staff Writer

REDISTRICTING is wrapping up in the city of Madison, with a public hearing scheduled for August 21 and possible adoption of new ward lines September 4.

“We have seen the options and we’ll narrow it down,” said Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler.

“What we’re trying to do is not split subdivisions or precincts. That’s the main thing. When you have someone [who lives] across the street from you voting [in another ward], that’s so confusing.”

The results of a much-anticipated study are in, and it appears that millions of dollars are needed to restore an artistic Jackson landmark.

Natchez food festival makes a perfect break

WE ARE OFF and running. We have suffered and have endured the extreme heat in July, cabin fever has set in. A break in the schedule is to attend the Natchez Food and Wine Festival. This festival is a regularly scheduled event the last weekend in July. This is a busy weekend for Natchez, attracting hundreds of gourmet buffs and chefs from the mid-south region.

Maneuvering out of Jackson, we wanted to miss the seven mile detour on the Natchez Trace. Entering I-220 and then on to I-20, we got on the trace at Clinton.

Crystal Springs debacle is embarrassing

On some mornings my Clarion-Ledger makes me wish I lived in a country where I didn’t speak the language.  Last Saturday, for example, I learned that the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, responding to a handful of its members, had stopped a wedding because the principals were black.

We have enough image problems in our state without that kind of garbage.

I’m sure you remember the Sunday school song that went, “Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight.”

Forgiveness is slow but progressing in Northern Ireland

The last time I crossed the border into Northern Ireland, I came face to face with an English soldier with a machine gun over his shoulder. It was July - marching season. Not a good time to visit, the soldier informed me. Sure enough, I witnessed rowdy, sometimes violent, bands of youths roaming the streets of Belfast.
