Historic Places, Meeting scheduled to inform Belhaven residents about National Register application

NORTHSIDERS will have a chance to learn more about plans to get the Belhaven community put on the National Register of Historic Places.

A meeting is slated for 5:30 p.m. on August 16 at the Barber Auditorium at the Belhaven University Library.

The meeting is open to the public.

Consultants with the Mississippi Heritage Trust (MHT) have almost wrapped up work on a historical survey of the neighborhood and are now putting the information together to be submitted to the state.

Grandview development exceeds expectations

THE FORUM AT Grandview shopping center in Madison has “more than lived up to expectations,” City Attorney John Hedglin said, with a fresh crop of retail businesses paying dividends for both the developer and the city.

Case in point: In 2011, the city issued $850,000 in tax-increment financing (TIF) bonds to fund some of the last infrastructure built at the site on Grandview Boulevard, which now includes Ulta, Michael’s and PetCo.

Unknowns: Jackson waiting for answers concerning costly EPS mandates

Talks continue between Jackson, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Justice on what will likely leave the city facing hundreds of millions of dollars in water and sewer repairs.

The city entered into negotiations with the regulatory agency in 2010, after being cited for numerous violations of the federal Clean Water Act (CWA).

St. Joseph Bruins

IN 2011, THE BRUINS were two games away from playing for the Class 2A state title.  If senior Nick Beasley has anything to do with it, St. Joseph Catholic School will be contending for rings this December.

The all-state wide receiver is returning for his final season with the Bruins, and is excited about the prospects of helping his team earn a spot in the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) state football championship.

“We just want to do what we did last year, but do it better,” he said.

St. Andrew's Saints

AFTER FOUR WINS last year, the St. Andrew’s Episcopal School football team is looking for a stronger year in 2012. Head coach J.J. Plummer is optimistic that a run of bad luck will not faze the Saints this season. Last season, which Plummer called a “rebuilding year,” yielded just four wins and seven losses. Plummer and his staff were hopeful that 2012 would be stronger because of the projected 16 to 18 experienced seniors that would be on the field, but that number has dwindled down to nine seniors.

Ridgeland Titans

AFTER THEIR SECOND straight loss in the 5A North State championship game in 2011, the Ridgeland Titans are looking to improve their stock in 2012. The Titans went 10-4 last season, going 6-1 in class 5A play. The Titans lost their first two games last season to Mendenhall, who advanced to the second round of the 5A playoffs, and Clinton, a 6A power.

Murrah Mustangs

AFTER A SURPRISINGLY successful season in 2011, the Murrah Mustang football team is looking to build upon that success in 2012. Led by head coach Zachary Grady, the Mustangs went 6-6 in 2011, winning five district games. Grady and his staff are optimistic that they can continue to build their 6A program into a championship team. “If we can stay healthy, we will have a great team this year,” Grady said of his 2012 squad. “We have returners and young guys with a lot of talent.”

MRA Patriots

AFTER A RESPECTABLE 7-5 record in the 2011 football season, the Madison-Ridgeland Academy Patriots are looking to take the next step to become more successful in 2012. Second-year head coach Forrest Williams is putting the necessary pieces together to build a championship-caliber team. A few new assistant coaches, returning starters, and talented newcomers are expected to make an immediate impact on the Patriots’ football program.

Madison Central Jaguars

AFTER THEIR FOURTH straight trip to the North State 6A championship game, the Madison Central Jaguars are looking to advance one more round and win a state championship. The Jaguars went 11-3 last season, while going 7-0 in district play.

Jackson Prep Patriots

JACKSON PREP  hasn’t won a state title in three years. Senior tailback Hamel McGraw wants to end that streak.

“I want another shot at it,” he said. “We’re going to take it game by game, but the motivation now is getting that (state championship) trophy back.”

The Prep Patriots start their season on August 17, at home against the Madison-Ridgeland Academy (MRA) Patriots.

Last year, Prep hammered their crosstown rivals 35-13.
