Supreme Court ruling

Hinds County Circuit Judge Jeff Weill has scored a pretty clear victory in his efforts to keep criminal cases flowing into his courtroom.

On Friday, the Mississippi Supreme Court stayed an order by Senior Circuit Judge Tomie Green stripping Weill and Judge Winston Kidd of their abilities to preside over criminal cases.

The decision was handed down on July 27, four days before Green’s order was slated to take effect. The order will be stayed until further notice.

Roads take toll on tires

POTHOLES HAVE BEEN a good thing for Mike Upton.

Upton, who owns four Upton Tire Pros service centers in the tri-county area, has one or two customers a week whose cars are damaged because of Jackson’s roads.

“An alloy wheel, if it’s hit at the right speed and at the right angle in a pothole, will bend easily,” he said.

The capital city has some of the worst roads in the state, according to the Central Mississippi Planning and Development District (CMPDD).

Mrs. Pridgen, 95, died July 28 at University of Mississippi Medical Center.

City of Madison combines departments

Economic development, community development, and building and permits will now be three divisions of one department called Economic and Community Development Services.

“The real reason, I think, is to try to work more efficiently,” said Jerry Cook, director of economic development, who will keep his current position and serve as director of the overall department.

Denbury Resources meets Madison residents to address testing concerns

Council to determine fate of house's use

The LeFleur East Foundation hasn’t given up on the Creekmore House.

Now, it’s up to the Jackson City Council to determine the home’s future.

The council is expected to decide in August whether or not to grant the foundation a special exception to use the facility at 4658 Old Canton Rd., as its headquarters.

The meeting is slated for August 20. If an appeal is filed, the vote will be set for Septmber 17
