A fund-raiser benefiting New Stage Theatre’s education department will feature the cast of several of New Stage Theatre’s youth actors and singers who have appeared in “A Christmas Carol,” “Annie,” “Guys and Dolls Jr.,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” and “Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr.”

“A Toast to Broadway Jr.” is a benefit for Mississippi’s professional regional theater, New Stage Theatre and their education department.

Man robbed leaving bar

JACKSON POLICE are looking for a man involved in a July 31 robbery at the Cherokee Inn.

Police were dispatched to the emergency room at Baptist Hospital after getting a call from the victim’s wife.

The call came in at 11:19 p.m. The Cherokee is located in the 1400 block of Old Square Road.

The victim told police that he was leaving the restaurant when he was forced at gunpoint to drive a man to a bank and withdraw money from an automated teller machine.

Madison schedules hearing on redistricting August 21

REDISTRICTING is wrapping up in the city of Madison, with a public hearing scheduled for August 21 and possible adoption of new ward lines September 4.

“We have seen the options and we’ll narrow it down,” said Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler.

“What we’re trying to do is not split subdivisions or precincts. That’s the main thing. When you have someone [who lives] across the street from you voting [in another ward], that’s so confusing.”

Redistricting hearing scheduled August 16

ONE Ward One neighborhood will likely have a new council person after tonight.

The Jackson City Council is expected to vote on new ward lines following a public hearing at the Jackson Medical Mall.

The meeting is slated for 6 p.m, Thursday, August 16, at the mall’s center court.

The public is invited to attend.

Plans being presented likely will include proposals to relocate one of two Ward One neighborhoods to Ward Seven.

Thalia Mara Hall study outlined to council members

The results of a much-anticipated study are in, and it appears that millions of dollars are needed to restore an artistic Jackson landmark.

Members of the Jackson City Council were recently briefed on the findings of a five-month study on the feasibility of restoring Thalia Mara Hall.

In all, consultants estimate that it will take nearly $9 million to restore the 44-year-old landmark, a move that will increase the facility’s use and save the city millions of dollars in the long run.
