Citizens' burden; Taxpayers to shoulder the costs of federally mandated upgrades

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has added more than $6,100 in debt to every household and business in the capital city.

That’s the cost of the federally mandated $400 million in sewer improvements the EPA is requiring Jackson to make over the next 17.5 years, divided by the city’s 65,000 water and sewer ratepayers.

Chance meeting; Northsider recalls visit with William Faulkner at Rowan Oak

COY Fletcher HAD GUTS.

The year was 1954, and Fletcher, a matchbook advertising salesman, was driving through Oxford, when he took it upon himself to visit William Faulkner.

Here’s the twist: Fletcher isn’t related, nor was he a friend of the family.

In fact, he didn’t even know where Rowan Oak was located, until asking for directions.

“I stopped in front of a modest home where a woman was working in a flower bed (and asked) ‘Can you direct me to Mr. Faulkner’s home?’ ” he said.

Residential permits up; commercial ones decrease

RESIDENTIAL building permits were up in the city of Madison this past fiscal year, and though commercial permits were down slightly, Building and Permits Director Bill Foshee says the city is holding its own after the 2008 recession.

Permits for new commercial buildings bottomed out in fiscal year 2009 in Madison, with just two permits issued. The city gave out 10 commercial permits in fiscal year 2011 and eight this past year. (Fiscal year 2012 started October 1, 2011, and ended September 30, 2012.)

Wilma Mosley Clopton is president of the board of directors of the Central Mississippi Steel Magnolias, an affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. A native Mississippian, Clopton lives in Jackson and is also a documentary filmmaker. She recently spoke with Sun staff writer Katie Eubanks about Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Fed mandates are about to send water bills through the roof

The more authority Mississippi surrenders to the federal government, the more our citizens pay.

Jackson has entered into a federally-mandated consent decree to make $400 million in upgrades to its dilapidated sewer system. You can blame (or commend) the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Justice for that.

The cost comes out to more than $6,100 per home or business owner.

Re-elect Bill Waller and Mike Randolph to the Supreme Court

Mississippi voters need to return Bill Waller and Michael Randolph to the Supreme Court. If either one of these men loses, the 5-4 conservative vote will become a 5-4 plaintiffs vote. We don’t need a return to the tort wars of yesteryear.

Remember the tort wars? It wreaked havoc on Mississippi cocktail parties, sending doctors and lawyers to opposite sides of the room. It caused a massive flight of doctors from the state of Mississippi, creating a deadly shortage of neurosurgeons and obstetricians.

150th Civil War anniversary merits reflection

One hundred fifty years ago this week my great-grandfather, Charles Carroll, was a private in the Amite County Defenders (Company “K” of the 33rd Mississippi Infantry). He was about to have his first bitter taste of battle. He assembled in Grenada with his compatriots from Amite County and other parts of Mississippi, and began learning the soldier’s drills.

PID woes: Controversy surrounds Madison County's PID agreements

MADISON COUNTY and the city of Madison disagree about whether the county’s 2005 contribution agreements with two public improvement districts (PIDs) are legal.

If the agreements are legal, taxpayers will likely be on the hook for millions of dollars per year until PID landowners start paying their assessments – or until the PIDs fail to reimburse the county and the county can opt out of the agreements.
