Blount enjoys success first term

YEARS OF WORKING at the Mississippi State Capitol has appeared to pay off for District 29 Sen. David Blount.

In his first term, Blount had 13 bills signed into law, more than any other freshman senator in the 2008-11 class.

Blount, who was re-elected in November and is now chairman of the Public Property Committee, continues to find success in the Republican-controlled chamber.

In 2012, the Democrat added four more bills to the tally of measures he’s had signed off on by the governor.

Refinancing bonds to save Ridgeland quarter million dollars

THE CITY OF RIDGELAND will save nearly a quarter of a million dollars over the next several years since city officials were recently able to refinance a 2004 bond issue.

Ridgeland taxpayers will save a total of $222,319.40 from the refinancing, or an average of $31,565 each year through 2019. The interest rate on the $6 million general obligation bond was reduced from 3.5 percent to 1.35 percent. And the maturity of the bonds was not extended.

“The new interest rate was much better than we had even anticipated,” said Mayor Gene McGee.

Bids due June 18 for Lake Harbour

RIDGELAND OFFICIALS will be receiving bids Monday, June 18, for the Lake Harbour Drive widening project, and work will start about a month later, officials said.

“We’ll award a bid at the next board of aldermen meeting after the 18th, and then the bid has to be approved by MDOT (the Mississippi Department of Transportation),” said Ridgeland Public Works Director Mike McCollum.

Lake Harbour will be widened from two lanes to five, from Northpark Drive to Highway 51.

Supreme Court approves Judge Green's request for conference

Judges Tomie Green and Jeff Weill will soon lay out their arguments before the state’s high court.

The Mississippi Supreme Court recently granted Green’s request to schedule a conference with justices to discuss further her plans to divide the circuit into criminal and civil divisions.

Justices recently handed down an order instructing Green to set up the meeting for June 27 or June 28, at a time that will be “convenient for all Hinds County Circuit Court judges.”
