Harvey Carr recalls growing up and living in Ridgeland

HARVEY CARR doesn’t have a lot to say.

Harvey has lived in Ridgeland his whole life, 97 years so far, as part of one of the first families to settle the area. Until finally retiring from farming in his early 90s, he never had much time to sit around and talk.

“Papaw, y’all never had any sunscreen or anything. How’d you keep your skin from being burnt up by the sun?” asks Robby Carr, one of Harvey’s five grandchildren, who has two sons of his own.

Harvey gives a one-word answer, “Tough,” and laughs.

Jackson officials mulling options for water, sewer improvements

JACKSON IS facing hundreds of millions of dollars in road, water and sewer repairs.

But with the death of House Bill 168, questions remain as to how the city will pay for them.

City leaders are considering taking out bonds or putting to use the special-option sales tax legislation passed in 2008. Water and sewer rate increases also are not being ruled out, but officials say no fee hikes are expected for ratepayers in the coming fiscal year.

Work to start soon on Redbud

REDBUD ROAD will soon be closed, and it has the full backing of the Jackson City Council.

The council voted 7-0 last week to approve turning Redbud’s Ridgewood Road entrance into a cul-de-sac.

Work is slated to get under way this summer, once contractors receive a permit.

Construction will take approximately four weeks to complete, weather permitting, said Dana Robertson, executive director of the Greater Eastover Neighborhood Foundation (GENF).

Back to the drawing board for Ridgeland's tax bill

RIDGELAND MAYOR Gene McGee says officials will soon start working on a bill that would authorize any city in Mississippi to temporarily increase sales tax if 60 percent of voters in the city approve.

“My position has always been that if there’s a project that’s worthy of allowing the citizens to vote to pay for that project, requiring a 60-percent majority, then when that project is over [the tax increase] goes away,” McGee said.

A conversation with Cmdr. McGowan on Precinct Four

Cmdr. James McGowan took the reins of Precinct Four in April. The new commander spoke with Sun Staff Writer Anthony Warren about his new position, his transition into the leadership role and his plans for the precinct. McGowan replaces former Cmdr. Wendell Watts, who resigned to take a head security position at Central Mississippi Medical Center. McGowan is a graduate of Wingfield High School and Hinds Community College. He and  his wife have three children.

Politically correct virus is spreading

Ever since high schools and colleges had athletic teams, they all had names, or nicknames, as was said in earlier days. And as professional athletics evolved, they too had “nicknames.”

The names provided a source of pride, comradery, and identity among alumni, students, local and regional, even national, fans. People do not say they are going to the “Green Bay professional football team game” next Sunday. They say they are going to the “Packers game.”

My high school friend, Tom Lisenby, has introduced me to a homespun master of the short personal essay, Leon Hale.  Mr. Hale writes a column of personal commentary three times a week for the Houston Chronicle.  The New York Times, in an editorial about Mr. Hale’s personal essays, “numbered Hale among the top three columnists writing today in America.”

Apollo 13 was launched at 1:13 p.m. CST April 17, 1970. NASA selected Navy Capt. James Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert on the fifth space shot to the moon. Early on the third day and some 200,000 miles from home, Apollo 13 was rocked by a terrific explosion. Quickly the power began fading out as lighted instrument panels faded and the air got thinner as oxygen leaked out of the larger module space craft.

Move over law is an easy way to get a ticket

I fought the law and the law won. Alas, my 37-year perfect driving streak has come to an end.

I didn’t go down without a fight. My “move over” violation had a gray area, but in the end, the judge sided with the police officer.

One reason I contested the ticket was to go through the whole process first-hand, which I figured would make an interesting column. I hadn’t been in a municipal court since 1980 as a cub reporter in Greenwood.

Watkins wants to bring golf course back

RANDY WATKINS wouldn’t say whether he would manage the LeFleur’s Bluff golf course when it reopens in June.

But the renowned golf pro said he would be willing to do what it takes to make the nine-hole facility something Jackson can be proud of.

“I’ll do whatever the (Mississippi) Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks asks me to do,” he said. “I’m a supporter of the department and a believer that the public deserves a facility they can enjoy with their friends and families.”
