A conversation with Sharon Summers on Ridgeland High

Sharon Summers is the new principal of Ridgeland High School (RHS). She takes the place of Lee Boozer, who was the school’s first and only principal since it was founded in 2002. Summers has worked at RHS since 2006, when she started as a teacher and administrative intern under Boozer. She was an assistant principal at RHS from 2008 to 2012. Summers recently spoke with Sun staff writer Katie Eubanks about her new role as head principal.

Rachel Batte and Luke Fortner of Jackson announce the birth of their daughter, Ella Channing Fortner, June 28 at St. Dominic Hospital. Grandparents are Anastasia Batte, Rich and Beth Batte, William Allen Fortner and the late Kathy Jo Fortner. Sister Lori Hayes also welcomes the baby.

Two people who knew where they were going

JUST AFTER EASTER, I took a trip to Arkansas to see family and friends.

I got to visit with my grandma for a few days, and I even saw my 20-year-old cousin Jake, whom I typically only see at Easter. Jake and Garrett, Aunt Margaret’s boys, always stayed kind of quiet at Easter family get-togethers – until they started smashing eggshells on people’s heads, that is.

Within three months of my vacation, both Grandma and Jake were gone. I am so glad I took that trip.

Grandma had opinions, and she always shared them.

A look at Mississippi from the air

The Smithsonian Channel’s engrossing Aerial America series recently aired its episode on Mississippi. It’s not a perfect or complete look at Mississippi, but it’s clear-eyed enough and worth an hour of your time.

Like the other states in the series, ours is filmed entirely from the air. A voice-over commentary by Jim Conrad runs throughout, but there are no talking heads, no cute kids eating ice cream, no blathering interviews.

Obamacare simply means more fed control

Right after the U.S. Supreme Court decision on Obamacare came down, Holly Dean, an ad rep for the Northside Sun, walked into my office. As a wife and mother of three young children, she wanted to know what this meant for her and her family.

Many people fear Obamacare will mean losing their company insurance and being thrown into a government plan. For Mississippians, they fear losing their Blue Cross of Mississippi coverage and getting something like Medicaid instead.
