Jackson excelling when it comes to medical care list

Mississippi and Mississippians have a way of finding themselves on “lists,” some of national recognition whose intent is to cast negative aura.         

There may be unsettling evidence that Mississippians are too much this way or that way, none good, so become listed. But then there follows a list of "best kept secrets," and high on that one is the recognition of imperfections, and a resolve to remedy them. There comes to be a commitment to excellence where ‘good enough’ never is.

I read Lee Paris' moving article in the Sun with tears in my eyes, though I am not a weeper. His paean on the love of a father for his daughter was outstanding, and made one believe in the enduring power of family love across generations. This young bride was truly blessed, and I'm sure she realizes it.

Progress against obesity

Mississippi may be making some progress in addressing its obesity epidemic — at least among children, according to figures released this week.

Unfortunately, the improvement is not across the board. Younger kids are slimming up better than older ones, and white kids better than black kids.

First, here are the encouraging numbers from a study conducted by a professor at the University of Southern Mississippi.

C-Spire battles AT&T to preserve cellular compatibility

Protecting free and competitive markets is a legitimate role of the government. Banks that are “too big to fail” are too big.

Back in the old days, this country had an active anti-trust division. Its role was to prevent gargantuan companies from dominating markets and squashing competition. A monopolized market is not a free market.

AT&T was broken up into eight separate companies. It worked. The next 30 years saw amazing advances in telecommunications and a blossoming of competition.

Madison targets unsightly properties

THE CITY OF MADISON is keeping busy cleaning up unsightly yards and properties.

Two weeks ago, city officials held public hearings on four separate properties in need of work. And the building and permits department has done more than $7,000 worth of work on parts of the former Northbay golf course.

“We’re kind of overwhelmed,” said Building and Permits Director Bill Foshee, whose department oversees code enforcement in the city.

Detour scheduled for Pear Orchard Road

STARTING IN mid-August, drivers should start thinking about alternate routes if they travel Pear Orchard Road in Ridgeland.

Thornton Construction Company will be replacing a ditch system used by the Longmeadow neighborhood, located off Pear Orchard between Lake Harbour Drive and School Street. The project is supposed to alleviate longtime drainage issues in the area.

Rick Dillard is the new  president of the Mississippi Wildlife Federation. He lives in Gluckstadt with his wife, Jocelyn, and two sons. Dillard has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mississippi State University in fisheries management. He recently spoke with Sun staff writer Katie Eubanks about conservation, wild hogs, and Wildlife Federation programs.

Madison County gets go-ahead on roads

MADISON COUNTY officials have gotten preliminary engineering approval for most of the state-aid road projects on the four-year road plan.

County Engineer Rudy Warnock told the board of supervisors recently that the county had approval from the Mississippi Office of State Aid Road Construction (OSARC) on Bozeman, Livingston, Pear Orchard, Rice, and Robinson Springs roads.

Plans call for overlays on parts of all five roads.

Warnock said now he can start designing the projects.

Madison County supervisors again reduce square footage

THE MADISON COUNTY Board of Supervisors has let another developer reduce the minimum square footage in a residential development.

This time, however, it doesn’t appear that area residents are upset about it.

Two weeks ago, developer Kerry Howell asked the board to let him reduce the minimum home size from 1,600 square feet to 1,400 in Magnolia Pointe, a neighborhood off Yandell Road three miles east of Highway 51.
