Mike Espy new attorney for supervisors

MADISON COUNTY supervisors listed several reasons last week for firing Board Attorney Eric Hamer and replacing him with former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy.

But perhaps District 4 Supervisor Karl Banks said it best: “It’s just politics.”

All five supervisors said Hamer had been a great board attorney for the past four and a half years, but they all had reasons for wanting to hire someone else.

Burns, colleagues travel as part of Rotary special project

Recently, Burns ventured off to Taegu, Korea, where she led a team from the North Jackson Rotary Club. The team was small, consisting of only four members.

District 6820 selects four non-Rotarian professionals from among applicants.

Jimmie Earl Walker

Services were held June 25 at St. Peter’s Cathedral for Jimmie Earl ‘Jim’ Walker of Madison.

Walker, 87, died June 22 at St. Catherine’s Village.

Walker was born October 17, 1924 in Stafford, Kan., to Ed and Hazel Walker.

Accolades for county

The Hinds County Public Works Department has earned accreditation by the American Public Works Association (APWA), becoming the first county agency in the state of Mississippi to be accredited. Hinds County becomes the 72nd public agency in the United States and Canada to achieve accreditation status.

Hinds road plan

A PORTION of County Line Road has been tapped for a major renovation under Hinds County’s newest four-year road plan.

It is the only Northside road being included in the plan, but one of several roads that the county is repaving within the Jackson city limits.

The board of supervisors recently approved the plan, which includes overlays and maintenance of county, city and state roads from 2011 to 2015.

The road will be entirely reconstructed from U.S. 49 to the Ridgeland city limits, a distance of approximately two miles.

Sewer upgrade

SEWER SERVICES on Jackson Street in Ridgeland will soon get an upgrade.
“We’re actually going to install a gravity-flow line in place of a force main on the south side of Jackson Street,” said Ridgeland Public Works Director Mike McCollum.
“This will eliminate a pump station that we won’t have to pay a monthly electric bill and maintenance on. It will also eliminate an environmental issue. We have had some overflows.”

LeFleur's Bluff golf course to reopen before fourth

AFTER BEING closed for nearly two months, the LeFleur’s Bluff golf course will soon be reopened to the public.

State officials expect to meet their deadline of reopening the revamped course before the July Fourth holiday, weeks after it was closed for renovations. An exact opening date had not been set at press time.

Settlement reaps road improvements

RIDGELAND AND Madison are set to reap the benefits of Madison County’s recent settlement with the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) over the failed Reunion Parkway interchange.

In addition to MDOT eventually building the proposed interchange, terms of the May 23 settlement agreement included $6 million to be spread out among multiple roadways in the county and the two cities.
