In memoriam

Marilyn Sill Baugher

The life of Marilyn Sill Baugher will be celebrated June 2 at a memorial service at Trinity United Methodist Church, Wilmette, Ill. Mrs. Baugher’s ashes will be scattered in the church’s courtyard memorial garden, mixed with those of her late husband William.

Mrs. Baugher of Wilmette, Ill. died May 9. She was 88.

State shuts down LeFleur's Bluff golf course

IT’S CLOSED.

The golf course at LeFleur’s Bluff State Park is closed.

Signs posted at the park’s Lakeland Drive entrance say the links have been shut down, but only temporarily, and only for repairs.

After being in charge there for four years, the Ebenezer Group recently threw in the towel and the state is again running the facility.

Kemper gasification plant not looking like a great deal

When Mississippi Power Company unveiled its plans in 2009 for a coal gasification plant in Kemper County, it sounded like an exciting, forward-looking idea.

The plant would use an abundant natural resource in this state — low-grade coal — for which there has not been a huge demand. It would employ pioneering technology that reduces the amount of carbon emissions normally coming from coal-fired plants. It would provide its Southeast Mississippi customers with a dependable home-grown source of electricity. It would be a major jobs provider in East Mississippi.

Crossroads Film Festival is a local treat

THE 13TH CROSSROADS FILM FESTIVAL occurred from April 13 to April 15, 2012. It showed me that Mississippi has a film industry of  its own. The film festival showed features, short subjects, biographical films, cartoons, computerized graphic images, professionally-made films, amateur films, fictional-science-world films, rural-area made films and Mississippian films.

Reddix should serve on the Mississippi Board of Health

Our lieutenant governor, Tate Reeves, and governor, Phil Bryant, are doing a disservice to Northsider Dr. Carl Reddix. Reeves and Bryant are holding up the appointment of Reddix to the state Board of Health because of an insignificant link to a clinic that has done abortions.

Sunlanders in Service

Navy Seaman Recruit Soren M. Jessen, son of Debra L. and Michael K. Jessen of Madison, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Jessen is a 2011 graduate of Prairie Creek Private School of Madison.

 

Army Pvt. Ashley B. Ware has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Ware is the daughter of Patrice Otto of Jamestown Way, and Patrick Ware of Canton. She is a 2010 graduate of St. Joseph Catholic School.

Wade E. Ward was recently promoted to the position of senior relationship banker for Citizens National Bank’s Jackson area market. Ward has been associated with the bank for the past nine years, and has 14 years of total banking experience.
