Parking meter future

Broken parking meters in downtown Jackson could soon be a thing of the past. The city is planning to bring on a private firm to upgrade and maintain the city’s meters and possibly enforce parking laws.

Officials are now in talks with a firm, but say it will likely be a few months before a proposal is brought to the city council.

Crafts center offers variety of summer camps for children

SUMMERTIME is a time when many people are traveling and the kids are headed to camp.  Most people think of camp as a place to do outdoor ‘camp’ type activities.  Traditional camps like these are a great experience but there are other options for kids out there not wanting to go off to a traditional summer camp.  The Mississippi Craft Center fits the needs of a child wanting a different camp experience. 

It is helpful to view the Mississippi Craft Center as a solid option rather than an alternative choice to the traditional summer camp.

Library Commission offers special library

ONE OF THE best-kept secrets on the Northside is a library.

Tucked away in the Mississippi Education and Research Center off Ridgewood Road in Jackson, the Mississippi Library Commission (MLC) has a library of its own, one that is open to the public.

Since the MLC is a state agency that supports public libraries throughout the state, the MLC library does the same thing. It supplements public libraries when needed. But it’s also there for anyone 17 or older who has a public library card.

A tale of two lakes

IF JOHN MCGOWAN had his way, Two Lakes would have been finished 15 years ago and development along the project would be thriving.

Instead, engineers are about to begin a new feasibility study, this time on the One Lake project, a scaled-back version of McGowan’s original plan. The study will cost around $1.8 million.

Highway 463 bypass slated for opening June 15

AFTER MORE THAN a decade of delays, the Highway 463 bypass north of downtown Madison will be finished and open next weekend, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT).

MDOT and Madison officials will hold a ribbon cutting at the crest of the new 463 bridge above the railroad tracks Friday, June 15, at 10 a.m.

 “This is one of the most exciting days in the history of our city,” said Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler of the bypass, which was recently named Madison Parkway.

Demand for area independent schools reaching capacity

SPACES ARE FILLING up at the Northside’s private and parochial schools.

The majority of schools in Northeast Jackson and South Madison County are nearing or have reached enrollment capacity for the fall, and are now putting students on waiting lists or in wait pools.

Schools are still urging parents to apply, saying that some spots could open up this summer as families relocate for new employment.

Other schools say they will adjust their faculty and staff to meet the needs of more students.

Ridgeland plans to go 'paperless'

RIDGELAND IS going paperless.

The city will no longer print paper copies of board packets and agendas for board of aldermen meetings and committee meetings. Instead, Mayor Gene McGee, the seven aldermen, city attorney and city clerk will each have an iPad for official use.

“This will reduce the amount of paper we use and the manpower in putting the packets together for each meeting,” said City Clerk and Human Resources Director Paula Tierce. “It’s something that we have been looking at for several years.”

Optimist speaker

Former columnist and new executive director of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Rick Cleveland (left) recently spoke to the Optimist Club of Jackson. Cleveland talked about his former career as a sports columnist and his plans for the hall of fame, such as revamping its Web site and increasing corporate sponsorship. A conversation with Will Longwitz on first term in Senate

Will Longwitz just finished his first session in the state Legislature as District 25 senator, representing parts of Madison, Ridgeland and northeast Jackson. Longwitz also has a law practice in Madison. He and his wife, Leigh Ann, are members of Chapel of the Cross and have two daughters. He recently spoke with Sun staff writer Katie Eubanks about the 2012 session.

Power plant in Kemper bad idea

The Mississippi Public Service Commission’s support of Mississippi Power Company's Kemper County Power Plant is indefensible and ridiculous. Clearly Commissioner Brandon Presley has this one right and Commissioners Leonard Bentz and Lynn Posey are just flat wrong to support the costly, environmentally destructive, unnecessary project.
