Bill gives reservoir more representation

RESERVOIR residents will have more of a voice next year on the board of directors for the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District (PRV).

A bill that has passed both houses and now awaits the governor’s signature will require eight of the PRV board’s 14 directors to live at the Ross Barnett Reservoir. 

The PRV governs the reservoir and the lands around it, which include parts of Madison, Rankin, Hinds, Scott and Leake counties.

A conversation with Robertson on 200 Million Flowers

Craig Robertson is executive director and co-founder of 200 Million Flowers, a new adoption agency on the Northside. Robertson, along with his wife Rachel, started the organization in 2011. Robertson is a graduate of Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi School of Law, and practices family law in Ridgeland. He and Rachel have two children: Mollie Ann, 8, and Emma, 6. He recently spoke to Sun Staff Writer Anthony Warren about the new organization.

Green defends decision to split court

ANOTHER SALVO HAS been fired in the battle to determine who will preside over criminal cases in Hinds County.

Last week, Senior Circuit Judge Tomie Green said in a brief that her decision to reorganize the court was well researched and will make the system “more effective and efficient ... for the citizens of Hinds County.”

The brief was filed with the Supreme Court on May 10, in response to an emergency petition from Circuit Judge Jeff Weill asking the justices to prevent Green from dividing the circuit into criminal and civil divisions.

Robes come off - Weill, Green battle to hear criminal cases

TWO HINDS COUNTY judges are locked in a battle to see who gets to preside over criminal cases.

Senior Circuit Judge Tomie Green is attempting to remove Northside Judge Jeff Weill and Judge Winston Kidd from the criminal docket.

On April 17, Green issued an order saying that, beginning August 1, the court would be divided into two districts – one criminal and one civil. She and Judge Bill Gowan would be assigned all criminal cases, while Weill and Kidd would handle civil.

What's the point of benching the best judge

Relieving the best criminal judge of all his criminal cases is not the way to exercise responsibility as senior circuit judge. What on earth is Hinds County Senior Circuit Judge Tomie Green doing?

Green has averaged one criminal trial per year. Judge Jeff Weill tried 15 cases in his first year on the bench. Why would Green remove the most effective criminal judge?

Marine Corps Pvt. Michael W. Palmer Jr., a 2006 graduate of Ridgeland High School, recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

 

Army Pvt. Andrew Lavine has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Lavine is the son of Marquita Lavine of Meadowview Drive, and Kevin Lavine of Byram. He is a 2008 graduate of Murrah High School.
