Dear Editor:
In his column of March 29, Mr. Jeanes indicates that voter ID is designed only to discourage voter fraud. However, it also discourages voters who do not have an official photo ID. There are no verified cases of fraud which the ID would prevent. Getting one requires a birth certificate which costs. Its effect on the very poorest is clearly similar to the poll tax. Mr. Jeanes’ position is that of an elitist and the saddest part is that neither he nor many of your readers realize it nor are willing to acknowledge it.
