Madison county public defenders losing health insurance after IRS audit

IN WHAT COULD BE the first IRS audit of Madison County, the federal agency is saying it intends to treat the county’s public defenders as county employees rather than independent contractors, which could bring a big financial penalty to the county.
That’s because the county has been providing its 11 public defenders with health insurance since November 4, 1996, but has not been paying federal withholding taxes on their income.
