Admittedly many of the current laws regulating personal choices serve a good purpose and, as a general rule, are worth supporting.
Wearing seatbelts, for example, has been shown to save lives. So does wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle.
Smoking restrictions in public places certainly benefit non-smokers who are thus protected from the harmful effects of other people’s deadly habits.
The question, though, is how far government should go in protecting us from ourselves when our own bad behavior doesn’t necessarily harm others.
