
Ninety years ago last month, President Theodore Roosevelt went on a Mississippi bear hunt in Issaquena County. The hunt fared badly and by sundown on the second day had produced only an old wounded bear tethered to a tree and savaged by the dogs. Offered the chance to dispatch it, Roosevelt said no, drawing the line at shooting a helpless animal.
