
Ever since high schools and colleges had athletic teams, they all had names, or nicknames, as was said in earlier days. And as professional athletics evolved, they too had “nicknames.”
The names provided a source of pride, comradery, and identity among alumni, students, local and regional, even national, fans. People do not say they are going to the “Green Bay professional football team game” next Sunday. They say they are going to the “Packers game.”
