Retirement fund still solvent; hit hard by stock market crash

Jackson’s police and firefighter retirement system is underfunded by nearly $62 million, but the system is still solvent, so say city officials.

The system was on track to be fully funded by 2020, but fell behind as a result of the near crash of the stock market in 2008 when investment returns dried up.
