
As Mississippi lawmakers and Gov. Phil Bryant deliberate over what form merit pay for teachers might take, it’s certain that standardized test scores will be a significant part of the proposal.
They should be. The tests are the only objective measure of how much students are learning — and thus how effective a teacher is.
Still, there is a downside that needs to be closely monitored.
