Skin cancer is the most prevalent form of all cancers in the U.S., and the number of cases continues to rise. There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. The first two are less serious and make up 98 percent of all skin cancers.
Tick paralysis results from exposure to a neurotoxin released by tick salivary glands during a blood meal; it is the only tick-borne disease not caused by an infectious agent. The toxin appears to be produced exclusively by female, egg-laden ticks.
Burns are damage caused to one or multiple layers of skin and flesh by external sources of heat, and range in severity from minor to major. In this column I will not cover chemical or electrical burns, nor will I address the handling of major burns.
