As a longtime board member, Nelson, along with her husband Phil, have given untold hours to the work of the largest African American boarding school in America, located just 15 miles south of Jackson.
This Saturday night, the Nelsons, along with Northsiders Sherry Greener, Louise and Patrick Ridgway, Ann and George Schimmel, Judy and Josh Wiener, Suzan and Tommy Thames, J.P. and Trenton Milam, Jay and Martha Cooke, Jay and Shawn Omara, Jimmy and Sybil Childs, Isaac Byrd, Zach and Susie Hederman, Stuart and Erica Speed, Charles and Ann Hooker, Merrill Tenney McKewen and fellow Piney Woods School board member, Patricia McClure and her husband Justin, will host a fund-raiser at the new Mississippi Museum of Art for the school.
The new museum will be the backdrop for the black tie optional cocktail party.
Guests will be entertained by a performance by nationally known recording artist/harpist, Jeff Majors.
Majors will perform his special style of jazz, gospel, and R and B on his white, acoustic-electric harp.
Another treat planned for the evening will be a performance by the school’s internationally known choir, the Cotton Blossom Singers.
Fifty students strong, the choir is always a crowd pleaser.
“I am so glad that the school’s president, Dr. Reginald Nichols, has decided to have a fund-raiser in Jackson at the new Museum of Art.
I hope that all of Jackson will attend this exciting evening to support the good work being done at Piney Woods. It is going to be an exceptional event. Dr. Nichols and his staff are truly changing the world one student at a time,” Nelson said.
