Our world has changed so much so fast. There are people still living who remember when space exploration was a seemingly impossible dream; look where we are now. People in their 80s remember cars that didn't have air conditioning. Now, rear hatches are smarter than me, not to mention all the other stuff cars can do now. Computers.
I spend a lot of time in the woods in nearby Yazoo County. On my drive to get there I get to see what is happening in the country yards. They are usually bigger and older than the newer communities in the Jackson area. I love seeing mature forsythia and quince with wisteria gone wild, framing the wood line behind the yard.
It takes me about this long to get 2019 put away and admit that 2020 has taken over. Every year it takes me about this long to put the correct date on checks and all those other papers to be filled out. As I am getting rid of my old calendars and bringing in the new ones, I realize how important calendars are to gardeners.
This year has started off to be one of big changes and realizations for me. The events that have occurred already are not bad ones nor ones that don't eventually happen for everyone, but they have been new for me. So far, in January, I woke up on the 16th and realized I was 56 years old. That’s a lot to ponder.
I get a chance to meet all kinds of interesting people being in the retail business, because I’m in the business of helping gardeners. And a Mississippi gardener is not just any ole gardener. Gardeners from Mississippi have a deep passion for what happens in their gardens.
It looks like we’ve made it through another Mississippi winter without any major weather related devastation. It looks to me like whatever combination of cold and rain we had this winter was great for the flowers on most of our spring bloomers. Azaleas and camellias have had an outstanding bloom season.
AT GARDEN WORKS we feel a sense of relief when we get Christmas and New Year’s behind us. We are getting ready for the spring season now. We have buyers in Atlanta getting all the new products for our new member plant and gift area called the sun room.
Finally, the Mississippi cool down is back. The cool down is the signal to prepare the yard for fall and winter. There are so many things happening in our yards that can be tended to. The hummingbirds are here now and about to move on to warmer areas.
