Volunteer at McLeod

Volunteers from St. Philip’s Episcopal Church and Ascension Lutheran Church are working to boost reading skills of students at McLeod Elementary. Through ARISE2Read, church members are focusing on strengthening second-graders’ reading so they are more likely to enter the third grade reading on grade level.




Hall of Fame

St. Andrew’s Episcopal School inducted four new members to the Athletic Hall of Fame during Homecoming week. This year’s inductees are (from left) Dave Wood, St. Andrew’s head of school from 1996-2005; Lauren Cohen, 2003; Corky Elliott, 1978; and Chandler Anthony, 2008.



Reaches top

Northsider Alan Weill, a 2010 Jackson Prep graduate and son of Tracy and Jeff Weill, summited Mt. Katahdin in Maine to cap a five month, 2,191-mile hiking adventure from Georgia to Maine along the Appalachian Trail. Weill (top left) is shown with fellow hikers.


Hosted seminar

Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area (HFHMCA) recently hosted with contributing community sponsors nationally recognized president and CEO of BASIC Diversity, Inc., Al Vivian, to lead his Diversity and Bias Seminar. Staff, board members, and clients of HFHMCA and 31 other nonprofits and businesses attended.



Telemarketers

The Rotary Club of Jackson was welcomed Cecil Brown, public service commissioner, as guest speaker for a recent meeting. Brown opened his discussion with a description of the work of the commission which regulates telecommunications, electric, gas, water and sewer utilities. He highlighted the difficulties with robocalls and telemarketers.


MUW luncheon

Metro Jackson alumni of Mississippi University for Women (MUW) gathered recently to learn more about the Eudora Welty Symposium held annually on campus.



Chi Omega Board

The Metro Jackson Chi Omega Alumnae Association Board met recently at the home of Amanda Puckett to finalize plans for its upcoming Annual Fall Wine and Cheese. The event will take place  Thursday, October 24 in the Ridgeland home of Mary Tison Brown. All Chi Omega Alumnae are welcome.


Performing at unwrapped

Northsider David “Dafe” Womack, who received his second Parents’ Choice Award for his latest CD, “I’ve Got A Bo Bo on my Toe Toe,”  will be preforming songs and signing CDs from both CDs November 14 at Interior Markets between 5 and 8 p.m. as part of Fondren Unwrapped.
