Residents in the East Manor and Canterbury Court neighborhood recently dedicated a “Little Library “ in memory of Jerome W. Smith. Smith, who died in 2019 at the age of 98 and was an educator in Mississippi for more than 50 years. At the dedication neighbors recalled how he “was always helping and thinking of others.” Smith served in World War II and then went to school under the G.I. Bill. He was a teacher, coach, guidance counselor and principal. He was the first principal of Callaway High School. He was the late Gov. Kirk Fordice’s education advisor. Smith received many awards including being named to the inaugural class of Education Hall of Fame at Ole Miss.
