New sidewalks for Gillespie

Residents along one Belhaven street will soon have a new sidewalk.

The Jackson City Council recently approved bringing on Blurton, Banks and Associates to replace a portion of a deteriorated sidewalk along Gillespie Street.

The contract is for $18,800 and will include replacing the concrete walkway in the 700 block, according to city documents.

Work calls for rebuilding the sidewalk and bringing it into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act standards. The sidewalk has deteriorated over the years and currently represents a liability for the city, according to documents provided to the council.

The contract was approved on a 6-1 vote, with Ward Three Councilman Kenneth Stokes voting against it.

Blurton was chosen through the bid process and one of four contractors that submitted proposals.

The project is being paid for out of the general fund.
