Rich retiring politicians

There will be an unusual push by Mississippi politicians to raise campaign money in the final weeks of December. That’s because a new state law kicks in requiring any campaign money raised after December 31 be used only for political campaign purposes.



The tuition hike game

Since 1990, all consumer prices have increased 100 percent on average, medical costs 200 percent and college tuition 400 percent. Those numbers come from the U.S. Labor Department as cited by the Wall Street Journal.




Sandpiper

Author Karen Brown was the guest speaker at recent meeting of the Madison-Ridgeland Rotary Club. Her book “Sandpiper” is an autobiography that chronicles Brown’s loss of sight as a woman in her 20s and how she has dealt with the challenges of blindness.


Mississippi blues

John Noblin, race director for the Mississippi Blues Marathon, spoke recently to the Rotary Club of North Jackson about the next running of the marathon, scheduled for January 27. Headed into its 11th year and with a new title sponsor in Continental Tire, the marathon has attracted runners from all 50 states and more than 15 countries.
