Hinds Community College

By RENEE COTTON,

For more than 100 years, Hinds Community College has provided quality educational programs that are convenient and affordable.

Throughout the years, the college has grown tremendously in response to changes in the area’s population, economy, workforce and culture.

As the largest community college in the state, Hinds Community College’s district encompasses six convenient and distinctive locations.

Today, Hinds enrolls more than 30,000 students annually in diverse academic, career/technical, workforce, secondary and adult programs designed to prepare students for employment, either immediately or after continued university study.

In order to do this, Hinds offers quality academic programs that cover the first two years of an academic education and are accepted by the state’s senior colleges and universities.

Academic students at the Raymond and Rankin campuses can take advantage of the Institute for Honors, Leadership and International Studies programs, which offer students several study abroad options and leadership opportunities from a global perspective.

Hinds Community College has been known as a leader in the career and technical education arena and continues to provide more than 70 career and technical program options that guarantee graduates have job-ready skills and are prepared for numerous employment options.  These programs support the economic growth of the state as Mississippi currently has more than 40,000 job opportunities for individuals with technical skills.

Some of these unique programs include the state’s only community college Aviation program at John Bell Williams Airport in Raymond. Program options include Air Traffic Control, Airport Operations, Aviation Security, Unmanned Aerial Systems and Commercial Aviation.

Healthcare is not only a thriving industry, but also an integral part of the Hinds educational experience. The college hosts a robust Nursing curriculum and a broad range of allied health programs, which are spread among three campuses. Within the healthcare arena, there is the growing need for employees who are trained in Health Information Technology, Medical Lab, Surgical Technology and Respiratory Therapy, among others. One can find these unique programs at Hinds Community College.

Hinds also has a “Fab Lab,” which is a unique digital fabrication laboratory for innovation and invention. The Fab Lab provides a learning environment where users can conceptualize, design, develop, fabricate and create anything. The Hinds Fab Lab is part of the National Fab Lab Network with more than 500 labs and is the only one in the state of Mississippi.

With the variety of options available, one can find a program designed to fit your needs such as training in stable fields like Paralegal Technology, a two-year program that prepares individuals for employment as a legal assistant/paralegal in courts, government agencies and law firms.

Hinds also offers training for careers in other emerging industries such as Cyber Security, Logistics, Fashion Merchandising, Computer Coding and Geographic Information Systems Technology.

Hinds students continue to be successful. In 2017-2018, the college awarded more degrees than ever before: 2,978 students received 4,059 degrees/certificates. And the college awarded its highest number of associate degrees in 10 years.
