Lucian Alston Harvey died Friday, May 21, 2021 from complications of Parkinson’s disease and Covid-19.
A humble, quiet, caring man of few words and immense integrity, he was at once sharp-witted, intensely intelligent, and disarmingly funny. He was a man of action, dedicating his life to God’s will, often subtly or privately. He loved his work, family, church, and community and chose to spend his life in loving service to all, as well as to causes which exemplified his values and beliefs. When the need for corrective lenses thwarted his dream of being an Air Force pilot, Mr. Harvey completed a civil engineering degree at Mississippi State University and returned to Jackson to address another love, serving Harvey Construction Company. Lucian worked his way from starting position to CEO after serving in every position at Harvey Construction Company. He required much from Harvey Construction employees, given his dedication to exemplary construction standards and his commitment to integrity, but returned employees’ dedication with mutual respect and devotion. Clients of Harvey Construction Company received his best, employing his trademarked care and integrity to every aspect of each job. Besides employing countless local residents in his tenure, Mr. Harvey’s love of his community was enacted through his commitment and service to numerous committees and organizations. He served in the Mississippi Division of the Association of General Contractors as well as on the Executive Committee of the Andrew Jackson Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The 2005 Class of Eagle Scouts was named in Lucian Harvey’s honor. Lucian was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International through the North Jackson Rotary Club. A member of Northminster Baptist Church for over fifty years, Lucian was dedicated to the church, its people, and its mission throughout his life from the simplest and straightest-set brick to serving as chairman of the deacons, Lucian Harvey could routinely be seen, anchoring the end of his favorite pew with a slightly mischievous grin only barely cloaking a true servant’s heart. That grin gave way to a reverential peace with each peel of the Northminster bells. He hoped others would share in that reverential peace brought to mind by the toll of a bell.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lucian Alston Harvey, Sr. and Mary Florence Patton Harvey, and his brother, William Byron Harvey.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jerri Jeter Harvey; his daughters, Lisa Harvey and Robin Harvey; his grandchildren, Parker Murff, Lucia Murff Marley (Will), Alston Thompson, Amanda Murff, Katie White, Mary McCall McArthur (Will), and Gafford White (Paige); his sister-in-law, Sylvia Harvey; and nephew, William Harvey; sister-in-law, Jackie Vance (O.G.); and brother-in-law, Pepper Jeter (Lynne); great-grandchildren, Norah and Russel McArthur, as well as his extended family.
