Members of the River of Pearls Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, celebrated on the DAR National Day of Service by cleaning the Blue Star Mother's Monument in Madison's Strawberry Patch Park. Chapter members (from left, back), Sally Patterson, Amy Palmer, Chapter Regent Kay Ewing, Saundra Dewey and Shellye Barnes; and (front) Marcia Penn and Donna Russell, joined with the Madison Parks and Recreation Department and Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler in the project. The Blue Star was designed in 1917 by World War I Army Capt. Robert L. Queisser of Ohio who had two sons serving on the front line. His banner quickly became the unofficial symbol for parents with a child in active military service. Members of the River of Pearls Chapter, the newest chapter in the state, plan to continue their work on the memorial.
