Commercial growth results in sales tax revenue increase in Madison

The city of Madison has seen a jump in sales tax revenue recently, which could be attributed to the commercial growth the city is experiencing.

In January 2017, the city brought in $709,136 in sales tax. The following year, the city saw $758,375 in sales tax.

Sales tax revenue increased by $49,239, or 6.94 percent.

Work could start soon on bridge

A contractor could be brought on to replace the Meadowbrook Road bridge in February, about 10 months after it was closed for structural concerns.  The bridge is one of three on the Northside that the city of Jackson would like to have under repair in the new year.  Public Works also hopes to bid out the Cavalier Drive and Hawthorn Drive bridge

Mayor McGee aims for pedestrian-friendly West Jackson Street

It’s no secret that West Jackson Street is Ridgeland’s designated “downtown” area.

However, Mayor Gene McGee would like to see some changes along the street to enhance the downtown feel residents have come to associate with the area.

JA to host area show choirs. Jackson Academy will host its 7th annual Show Choir Invitational Friday, February 1 beginning at 5 p.m. and Saturday, February 2 beginning at 10 a.m. Local schools will perform including Jackson Prep and Madison Central. The invitational will also feature Jackson Academy’s show choirs in exhibition performances.

JA student killed in car crash, one day before she was to graduate

A vigil will be held tonight for the Jackson Academy (JA) student killed in a car crash today.

Frances Anne Fortner was driving along Ridgewood Road around 1:30 p.m., when she hit a manhole cover and her car flipped, according to Precinct Four Cmdr. Keith Freeman.

The vigil will be at 7 p.m., on the school's campus.

Van Devender family donates for expansion of Batson Children’s Hospital

The simple prayer of a child for the patients of Batson Children’s Hospital brought about a $1.5 million gift from the Van Devender Family Foundation to expand pediatric care at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC).

Michel still wants neighborhood improvement district

District 25 Sen. Walter Michel hopes the fourth time will be the charm when it comes to seeing a “neighborhood improvement district” bill passed.

The Northside senator is planning to introduce a bill creating the NIDs in the 2018 session.
