City plans changes to mass transit system; hiring consultant.

A complete overhaul of Jackson’s mass transit system is in the works, with city officials expected to seek out a consultant in the coming weeks to help determine the system’s needs.



More ramps open in Pelahatchie Bay

Battle against salvinia continues to be successful.

Following another good report from its partners in the battle against the invasive plant giant salvinia, the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District board of directors Thursday opened four additional boat ramps and a kayak ramp in the Pelahatchie Bay area of Barnett Reservoir.

Renaissance to feature new show fountain, theater and Costco

The second and third phases of Renaissance are on track to be finished next year, complete with another show fountain and Malco theater.

The city of Ridgeland director of community development Alan Hart said, based on reports from the developer, that phase two of Renaissance should be open by summer or fall of 2019.





Beemon Drugs closing

Beemon Drugs Owner Lester Hailey has announced that the iconic North Jackson drug store will be closing on June 25. 

A notice was posted at the Maywood Mart institution today. 

The store, which has been a staple on the Northside for years, is known for providing home delivery of medications to customers. 



Josie Bidwell on lifestyle medicine

Josie Bidwell is associate professor of nursing and lifestyle medicine clinician for the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). She holds a bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate in nursing from UMMC. Bidwell spoke to Sun Staff Writer Anthony Warren about her position and about the school’s lifestyle medicine clinic.

Awarded scholarship

The Harmon and Faye Bowman Memorial Scholarship is awarded to two senior high students at Jackson Academy who indicate the promise of success in personal endeavors through leadership potential and an entrepreneurial spirit. The Rotary Club of North Jackson recently welcomed Anne LeBreton, outreach coordinator for Mississippi Blood Services as its speaker. LeBreton thanked the club for their past support and explained the need to donate blood.

John Vanderloo

John Vanderloo, M.D., a family medicine physician, was recently named a Doctor of Distinction by the Mississippi State Medical Association. MSMA Doctors of Distinction are named after they complete the full course of the MSMA Physician Leadership Academy, which trains them to be leaders and advocates.
