New Eagle Scout

Honored for excellence

Catherine Bennett (right) from New Summit School received the Metro Teacher Honoree Award of Excellence from the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership.  Bennett was one of 12 selected from more than 100  nominees. The award is designed to elevate the teaching profession by recognizing and awarding teachers.

City spending millions on problems involving Siemens contract

The city of Jackson has spent close to $3 million since last April to address problems associated with the Siemens contract.

Now, the city is trying to recoup those costs and much more.

The Lumumba administration recently filed suit against the firm and some of its subcontractors seeking $225 million in damages.

I don’t get weepy at much. My friend, Mary Straton Smith, knows that military homecoming videos can bring me to my knees and uses this to derail my day by tagging me in the tear-jerkiest of tear-jerkers that she comes across on social media—but I don’t cry at my kids’ performances or first or last days of school.


Champion

Before an audience of more than 16,000 Northsider Amy Forsyth preformed a duet with Carrie Underwood in Fiserv Forum. Amy, a Northside Sun account manager, had the opportunity to share the stage with the award winning country singer after she won The Champion rap contest.

Stickfire

Reunion Golf and Country Club hosted its annual Stickfire Golf Tournament recently with a record 108 players competing. The tournament is played every year in the name of the late Stan Hall, who was a member at Reunion when he suddenly passed away at his home January 16, 2016.

JA student killed in car crash, one day before she was to graduate

A vigil will be held tonight for the Jackson Academy (JA) student killed in a car crash today.

Frances Anne Fortner was driving along Ridgewood Road around 1:30 p.m., when she hit a manhole cover and her car flipped, according to Precinct Four Cmdr. Keith Freeman.

The vigil will be at 7 p.m., on the school's campus.

Renaissance to feature new show fountain, theater and Costco

The second and third phases of Renaissance are on track to be finished next year, complete with another show fountain and Malco theater.

The city of Ridgeland director of community development Alan Hart said, based on reports from the developer, that phase two of Renaissance should be open by summer or fall of 2019.
