New Stage Theatre Schedules Free Workshop About Auditioning

New Stage Theatre will offer the Art of the Audition workshop for free on January 25 from 6:30-8 p.m. using Zoom.

The workshop is for anyone age 15 and older. To register, email sfrost@newstagetheatre.com or call 601-948-3533, extenson 245.

The workshop will offer participants an opportunity to learn how an acting class via Zoom works and to acquire tips that will help them nail their next audition. The workshop will introduce the technique directors look for in the casting process and will touch on cold reading, text analysis and how to prepare for a variety of auditions.

Participants should be prepared with a 60-second memorized monologue for the workshop. Participants with all levels of experience are welcomed.

“There’s always a silver lining. Here at New Stage, we have discovered that virtual theatre classes really succeed and offer the prospect for concentrated individual engagement,” said New Stage Theatre Artistic Director Francine Thomas Reynolds. “Although New Stage can’t offer acting classes in person until the second half of 2021, I am eager to start the one-on-one work with class participants now.”

New Stage Theatre Education Director Sharon Miles said, “As a professional artist, I can attest that natural talent can only take you so far. If you want to grow in any artistic craft, you have to put in the work! I have grown leaps and bounds under Francine’s direction. I have worked with her for 10 years and my growth as a theatre artist surprises even me! She has helped me trust my instincts, explore vulnerability and truly analyze text in order to bring characters to life. No one can do the work for you, but the right teacher/director can pull something out of you that you never knew you were capable of! “

New Stage Theatre is Mississippi’s professional not-for-profit theatre. Winner of the 2019 Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Theatre, the education department strives to equip people interested in theatre with the opportunity to develop and strengthen their acting skills in a professional environment, taught by educated and experienced theatre veterans. The emphasis of the classes is on the progression of theatrical skill, so that participants are able to enhance their skills and grow as actors.
