On September 2, 2020, the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) updated their website to report that out of all the Covid-19 related deaths in the U. S. from 2/1/20 to 8/29/20: "For six percent of the deaths, COVID-19 was the only cause mentioned. For deaths with conditions or causes in addition to COVID-19, on average, there were 2.6 additional conditions or causes per death.”)
Even though there are many unknowns associated with COVID, thankfully, people overall seem to be abiding by the mask mandates, social distancing and temperature checks so that hospitals don’t become overloaded. Stores and businesses have special hours set aside for the more vulnerable population to enter and shop. What a blessing! The CDC’s website makes it clear that people with pre-existing conditions need the most protection from this disease, but what should be equally protected is the economy - as it involves everyone. While COVID doesn’t seem to be leaving anytime soon, businesses must be free from the threat of lockdowns should cases increase. Otherwise, how can they plan for the future?
The governor of Florida was recently quoted as saying, “We will never do any of these lockdowns again.” As the officials protect our vulnerable population, Mississippi workers and businesses urgently need the assurance of no additional and devastating shutdowns. The show must, and will go on. Governor, as you refine the state’s approach to COVID to protect the most susceptible from this disease, please loosen your reins, and promise the good people of Mississippi - no more lockdowns!
