Northsiders are still able to get their locally-grown produce as the Mississippi Farmers Market remains open.
According to Mississippi Farmers Market Director Lisa Rippy, the Jackson-based market has remained open on Saturdays and has made adjustments to ensure safe shopping for residents.
“We are a state-owned and operated market and we’ve been able to remain open during these trying times,” Rippy said.
The market is open each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., but Rippy said they are considering opening for a weekday soon as well. They have made many changes to ensure the safety of shoppers.
“We have made several changes which have all been so well received by our vendors and customers,” Rippy said.
Customers will notice that booths are set up all around the building so they can walk around the outside perimeters of the market while shopping.
“We marked off six-foot waiting lines to pay for their produce, and each vendor has sanitizer for their shoppers,” Rippy said. “Many of our farmers also pre-bag and pre-package their produce, going that extra mile in making sure their shoppers receive produce that has been touched by the farmer, and then only by the consumer.”
Masks and gloves are also being used by vendors and customers.
“Also, wearing masks and gloves have been part of our market each Saturday,” Rippy added. “So many of our vendors and shoppers have communicated how grateful they are that we have remained open and taken such precautions for their safety.”
Vendors at the Mississippi Farmers Market will have a variety of fresh produce options, including snap peas, squash, kale, carrots, beets, herbs and more. In addition to vegetables, shoppers will find fruits, canned items, hot sauce, soap, lip balm, flowers, meat, milk, cheese, eggs and honey, among other items.
At press time, the Downtown Madison Farmers Market and the True Local Market in Ridgeland remain closed until further notice due to COVID-19 concerns.
Both farmers markets typically open around this time, but are closed at the moment until state social distancing regulations and guidelines are lifted.
