Freeland Harris Magruder

Freeland Harris Magruder, Jr. 89, passed away peacefully at Hospice Ministries on July 10, 2019, sixteen days shy of his 90th birthday. He was born on July 26, 1929 in Memphis, TN, the son of Freeland Harris Magruder, Sr., and Adele Critz Magruder.


Clifford Macgowan III

Clifford Macgowan III was born on June 22, 1949, in Jackson, Mississippi, the elder son of Thelma Thompson Macgowan (T) and Clifford Macgowan, Jr., (Kip).  On August 16, 2019, he met his Maker following an 18-month battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.


Mock trial

St. Andrew’s Episcopal School’s 2018-19 Mock Trial team competed in the Jackson Regional Mock Trial Competition. The team won both rounds of the tournament in which they competed at the Mississippi College School of Law. In addition to the team success, there were several team members who won individual awards for their performances.

New Hinds County DA

Hinds County will be getting a new District Attorney just as it faces a murder rate not seen since the crack years of the early 1990s. Ironically, the new DA, Jody Owens, led the Southern Poverty Law Center’s lawsuit against Mississippi for prison reform. That’s not exaclty a lock-’em-up resume.

Broadmeadow Farm is part of the organization, Sow Reap Feed, whose mission is to bring fresh, healthy produce to the food insecure in Jackson.

All boat ramps have been reopened in the Pelahatchie Bay area at the Barnett Reservoir, which have been closed since October 2018 due to the presence of the aquatic pest: giant salvinia.

Airport land annexation hearing scheduled Jan. 24; two cities want property

The first scheduled hearing in the annexation case involving the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport is slated for January 24.

Two cities, Flowood and Pearl, are attempting to annex land surrounding Jackson-Evers, in what city of Jackson officials call a “tax grab.”


Ridgeland’s farmers’ market slated to end in December extended because of success

The city of Ridgeland’s weekly farmers’ market, True Local Market, has been extended into the new year.

True Local Market began in October and was expected to run through the end of December 2018. However, due to the success of the market, it will continue.

The Annandale Chapter Daughters of the American Revo-lution met recently at the Country Club of Jackson.  Priscilla Harper, (right) MSSDAR organizing secretary, presented a program entitled “Looking for Ways to Revitalize Your Chapter”. Women’s club

The Official Mississippi Women’s Club recently celebrated its 80th anniversary with a recognition ceremony at the state Capitol. The club was founded in 1938 by Mrs. Hugh White, then first lady of the state of Mississippi.  The first formal reception for members and their husbands was hosted by Gov. and Mrs.
