No Relief

No raise again for beleaguered Jackson Police Department.

Jackson has lost 86 police officers in the last year. Even so, a pay raise likely won’t be on tap for Jackson’s finest as part of next year’s budget.

The Jackson City Council is expected to vote on the city’s 2020 fiscal year budget today, Thursday, September 12.

Softball champs

Mississippi Motion ’02 won the 16U Softball National Championship by winning the USSSA National Championship Tournament in Fort Walton Beach. Teams from across the country participated in the tournament. Motion ’02 went 6-1 in bracket play defeating the St. Louis Pirates in a championship game thriller 7-6.

Gerard Gibert on Mississippi Lottery

Gerard Gibert, a resident of Ridgeland, was recently named to the Mississippi lottery board of directors. He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting with a minor in economics from the University of Mississippi. District 25 Sen. Walter Michel hopes the fourth time will be the charm when it comes to seeing a “neighborhood improvement district” bill passed.

Beemon Drugs closing

Beemon Drugs Owner Lester Hailey has announced that the iconic North Jackson drug store will be closing on June 25. 

A notice was posted at the Maywood Mart institution today. 

The store, which has been a staple on the Northside for years, is known for providing home delivery of medications to customers.
