New Hinds County DA

Hinds County will be getting a new District Attorney just as it faces a murder rate not seen since the crack years of the early 1990s. Ironically, the new DA, Jody Owens, led the Southern Poverty Law Center’s lawsuit against Mississippi for prison reform. That’s not exaclty a lock-’em-up resume.

Voting system vulnerabilities

While Mississippi continues to largely ignore the warning that its dependence on paperless voting machines is asking for trouble, here comes word of another vulnerability that these older computerized voting systems probably have.

They use an operating system that will soon be outdated and more prone to hacking.


Rotary newest member

Dr. Waymond Lee Rone

Waymond Lee Rone died August 19, 2019 in Jackson, Mississippi. Just two weeks earlier he had been enjoying the salt air and sea breezes in his garden at Perdido Key, Florida. Many called him Dr. Rone, Wayne, and Daddy, but his grandchildren called him Poppy.


Award recipients

At Jackson Academy (from left) Elizabeth Copeland and Adams Kennedy were recipients of the Dan Morse Award, which recognizes a boy and a girl in the rising ninth grade class who embody the school’s mission to pursue lives of purpose and significance, and inspire others to do the same.


Freeland Harris Magruder

Freeland Harris Magruder, Jr. 89, passed away peacefully at Hospice Ministries on July 10, 2019, sixteen days shy of his 90th birthday. He was born on July 26, 1929 in Memphis, TN, the son of Freeland Harris Magruder, Sr., and Adele Critz Magruder.


Clifford Macgowan III

Clifford Macgowan III was born on June 22, 1949, in Jackson, Mississippi, the elder son of Thelma Thompson Macgowan (T) and Clifford Macgowan, Jr., (Kip).  On August 16, 2019, he met his Maker following an 18-month battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.


The Great Kapok Tree Sloths

St. Richard 3rd grade students presented a play based on the book The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry while studying biomes. Students created the set and their costumes for the play based on their research of plants and animals in the Amazon Rainforest. JA student killed in car crash, one day before she was to graduate

A vigil will be held tonight for the Jackson Academy (JA) student killed in a car crash today.

Frances Anne Fortner was driving along Ridgewood Road around 1:30 p.m., when she hit a manhole cover and her car flipped, according to Precinct Four Cmdr. Keith Freeman.

The vigil will be at 7 p.m., on the school's campus.

Renaissance to feature new show fountain, theater and Costco

The second and third phases of Renaissance are on track to be finished next year, complete with another show fountain and Malco theater.

The city of Ridgeland director of community development Alan Hart said, based on reports from the developer, that phase two of Renaissance should be open by summer or fall of 2019.
