Hole in One

The Sanderson Farms Championship is under way, and even for the casual golf fan, the tournament has a lot to offer.

The tournament runs through September 22 at the Country Club of Jackson and features some of the biggest names in professional golf.


Book fiasco

After allowing the books at the Charles Tisdale Library to rot, it now appears that the Jackson-Hinds Library System will let the city of Jackson foot the bill for disposing of them.

Last month, the Jackson-Hinds board of trustees voted to abandon its interests in the E. Northside Drive facility, effective September 30.


Dog Days of Summer

Short as the walk that ends the night                 

“You’re a good girl. Now behave yourself.” 

I tighten the leash, stop a moment to catch my breath, bend over and pet the dog.  “We should be able to finish our walk, then I have some things to take care of before I, ‘make it to the church on time,’” I hum.


World Peace

Madison mayor stays focused on continuing city’s success and safety

Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler said her goal for 2019 is to continue building on the city’s success, safety and overall quality of life that earned Madison national accolades in 2018.

“We will stay focused on maintaining the strong and safe environment we have and to build upon that,” Butler said. “The best is yet to be.”


Gluckstadt faces more opposition to becoming state's newest city

The legal battle over Gluckstadt incorporation wages on, as the city of Canton has filed a cross appeal against the 2018 jurisdictional ruling and the 2019 final decree granting incorporation. 

A local business owner, Ron Hutchinson, also filed an appeal before the 10-day appeals window closed on April 22.

JA student killed in car crash, one day before she was to graduate

A vigil will be held tonight for the Jackson Academy (JA) student killed in a car crash today.

Frances Anne Fortner was driving along Ridgewood Road around 1:30 p.m., when she hit a manhole cover and her car flipped, according to Precinct Four Cmdr. Keith Freeman.

The vigil will be at 7 p.m., on the school's campus.

Renaissance to feature new show fountain, theater and Costco

The second and third phases of Renaissance are on track to be finished next year, complete with another show fountain and Malco theater.

The city of Ridgeland director of community development Alan Hart said, based on reports from the developer, that phase two of Renaissance should be open by summer or fall of 2019.
