New Hinds County DA

Hinds County will be getting a new District Attorney just as it faces a murder rate not seen since the crack years of the early 1990s. Ironically, the new DA, Jody Owens, led the Southern Poverty Law Center’s lawsuit against Mississippi for prison reform. That’s not exaclty a lock-’em-up resume.

The good news is that Owens is impressive in many respects and his Democratic primary victory over strong opponents speaks even more so to his reputation. After years of controversy in the DA’s office, Hinds County citizens could use a smart, competent DA who understands our criminal justice system is broken. We just hope that he also realizes there are many dangerous people who truly need to be behind bars.
